A couple of months ago we were given the opportunity to host 17 year old Grammy winner, Lorde! She was in town for a concert and Canadian magazine, Fashion wanted to use our studio to feature in their May issue.
Typically we are not given a ton of information prior to a celebrity shoot because their agents/producers are trying their best to keep everything “on the hush”. The last thing they need on the day of a shoot is 1,000 fans screaming outside of building. This time was no exception. I was aware that Chris Nicholls was planning a fashion shoot in our studio and I had actually corresponded with him several times but the mention of who his muse would be was never brought up. I knew of Fasion Magazine. I knew that this shoot was for that magazine. I assumed it was for a model, celebrity or not.
The day prior to the shoot, Chris and his team came through the studio to do a walk through as well as drop off the wardrobe. The amount of clothing started to peak my interest, but due to keeping professional, I didn’t make a deal of it.
On the following morning, the studio was buzzing with people. Make-up artist, hair stylist, photographer, magazine producer, etc. Still, I had no idea who was coming in for the shoot and until I continued to hear “I just want to make sure SHE is comfortable” from the mouths of several people, I didn’t pay much attention. During this time the Houston Livestock Show was in town and I knew Reba was due to perform just a few days after. I began to think maybe she was the subject of the shoot but the types of clothing that were being looked at didn’t match what I figured to be Reba’s style. I finally asked the hair stylist, “Who is coming in today?” She replied, “YOU don’t know who is coming today!?” “No”, I replied. I felt silly given that it was MY studio and I had no idea who the celebrity was who I would be hosting. She immediately said, “Oh my God, LORDE!” Im not good with names but the energy in her response told me there was something to be excited about. I said, “Who is Lorde?” “She sings Royals”, she immediately responded. OHHHHHH! Yeah! I knew THAT song!
My 3.5 year old daughter was currently singing
it ALL the time, seriously.
Not soon after, Lorde arrived with her agent, toured the studio, and introduced herself to everyone. We have had our fair share of celebrities in the studio but this was quite an honor and Ella (Lorde) was an extremely sweet young woman. She was so incredibly humble from the first meeting and throughout the shoot.
Chris did his magic with his camera and they all bounced back and forth between Studio A & B, changing wardrobes along the way. One dress by Valentino was priced at $30,000! Someone on the team mentioned that there was over $400,000 in clothing on our changing racks, WOW!
All in all, the day was great. We had an A list celebrity in the studio and the magazine got some great images. Very, very cool.
